The Museum in Koszalin presents The Melancholy of the Wanderer, an exhibition exploring art, memory and the stories hidden within remarkable objects.
Now on display at the Museum in Koszalin, The Melancholy of the Wanderer explores the emotions connected with travel, discovery and remembrance through an imaginative combination of fine art and historical objects. Running until 31 December 2026, the exhibition encourages visitors to experience the excitement of uncovering forgotten treasures and creating their own interpretations of the stories they tell.
Curated by Wojciech Ciesielski, the exhibition transforms museum objects into fragments of an imagined journey. Rather than following a traditional historical narrative, it presents paintings and artefacts as if they were keepsakes gathered by an unknown traveller, inviting audiences to piece together the lives, places and memories they represent.
A Journey Inspired by Curiosity
The exhibition recreates the feeling of stumbling upon forgotten possessions in the attic of an old house or discovering unexpected places far from the usual tourist routes. Each object becomes a clue, encouraging visitors to imagine the people who once owned it and the journeys it may have witnessed.
Through this approach, The Melancholy of the Wanderer explores themes of memory, nostalgia and personal discovery. Familiar museum objects become starting points for new stories, reminding visitors that history is often built from small, seemingly ordinary fragments of everyday life.
Paintings and Treasures from Two Museum Collections
The exhibition has been created through a collaboration between the Museum in Koszalin and the National Museum in Szczecin, marking the celebrations of the 760th anniversary of Koszalin receiving its city charter.
Alongside rarely displayed objects from the Museum in Koszalin's own collection, visitors can also admire works from Szczecin, including paintings by some of Poland's most celebrated artists of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.
Featured artists include Aleksander Kotsis, Jacek Malczewski, Ferdynand Ruszczyc, Wojciech Weiss, Fryderyk Pautsch, Wojciech Gerson and Leon Kapliński, whose work also inspired the exhibition's promotional artwork.
Together, these paintings and historical artefacts create an atmosphere that is both reflective and open-ended, allowing each visitor to experience the exhibition in a personal way.
A Museum in the Heart of Historic Koszalin
The exhibition is presented at the Museum in Koszalin, located on Młyńska Street beside the scenic Park of the Pomeranian Dukes and just a short walk from the city's medieval defensive walls.
The museum regularly hosts temporary exhibitions alongside its permanent collections, making it one of the city's leading cultural attractions and an ideal stop while exploring Koszalin's historic centre.
